Singapore and Uzbekistan Sign MOU to Strengthen Legal Cooperation

1. Singapore’s Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, Mr K Shanmugam SC, and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Justice, Mr Ruslanbek Davletov, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Legal Cooperation on the sidelines of the Tashkent Law Spring¹. Non-Resident Ambassador of Singapore to Uzbekistan, Mr Zulkifli Baharudin, and Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Singapore, Mr Kakhramon Shakirov, were also present to witness the signing, which was conducted via videoconference.

2. The MoU provides a framework for legal cooperation in the following areas:

i) Exchange of information on the promotion of the rule of law

ii) Exchange of information on how legislation may be used to safeguard the interests of society and the economy during times of crisis, including during a pandemic

iii) Sharing of experience on the provision of legal services

iv) Sharing of experience and joint promotion of international commercial dispute resolution services, such as arbitration and mediation, and the joint promotion of the Singapore Convention on Mediation.

3. Minister Shanmugam said: “We share warm relations with Uzbekistan, and the signing of this MoU will further strengthen our ties. We are committed to further deepening our bilateral relations and cooperation in legal matters, and look forward to working closely with our counterparts in Uzbekistan.”

4. At the Tashkent Law Spring, Minister Shanmugam gave a welcome speech and participated in a panel discussion on the topic of “Implementation of a unified state legal policy: Current challenges and future trends”.
